FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Northern Virginia) -- June 14, 1999 -- The Alzheimer's Association, Northern Virginia Chapter will hold a free information forum titled, "Advances in Alzheimer's Research" on Wednesday, June 30th from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at The Goodwin House in Alexandria, Virginia. "New research studies in Alzheimer's are constantly appearing in the news today. Because the biomedical terminology and treatments can be confusing, this free information forum can help you understand the basics of the current promising research, and the most effective treatments," says Anthony Sudler, executive director of the Northern Virginia Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. Neil Buckholtz, Ph.D., Chief of the Dementias of Aging Branch at the National Institute on Aging and the National Institutes of Health, will discuss the current biomedical, behavioral, psychosocial and environmental research underway. Andrea Ganz, RN, staff educator for Goodwin House will accompany Buckholtz in discussing alternative therapies and treatments that have positive effects on behavior, cognition and overall well being of persons with dementing illnesses. If current trends continue, Alzheimer's disease will become the epidemic of the 21st century, destroying the lives and savings of 14 million baby boomers and their families. In Northern Virginia alone, 40,000 families are affected by Alzheimer's disease. The Alzheimer's Association, Northern Virginia Chapter is dedicated to serving the needs of those families and the community through various support programs and services. Please call the Northern Virginia Chapter at (703) 359-4440 for more information about this free Alzheimer's information forum or any other program or service. The Goodwin House is located at 4600 Fillmore Avenue in Alexandria. Free parking is available.
