Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk Sets the Pace on Saturday, October 6 Fairfax Community Members Walk Together In The Fight Against Alzheimer's Disease

(FAIRFAX)---Thousands of community members will walk together as part of Memory Walk 2001 on Saturday, October 6 to raise money to help National Capital Area families cope with the devastation of Alzheimer's disease. The Fairfax Memory Walk will take place on the campus of George Mason University (Braddock Rd and Route 123). Registration and warm-up exercises begin at 8:30 a.m. Presentations by teams and sponsors, and warm-up exercises will take place from 9:30-10 a.m. The 5-mile walk and 1-mile fun walk begin at 10 a.m. Following the walks, participants can enjoy music and entertainment by Oldies 100s Tom Kelly and the Rolling Oldies Show, great food by BBQ Unlimited, activities for children, exhibitors and more. Reporter Peggy Fox of 9 Eyewitness News and Rep. Tom Davis will show walkers their support at the Fairfax Memory Walk. "We take heart hearing President George W. Bush's encouragement to move forward," said Alan Stone, Alzheimer's Association president and CEO. "Our Memory Walks in the National Capital Area will go on as scheduled. We encourage our friends, families and colleagues to join us at our Memory Walk. The highest tribute we can pay those who died as a result of the terrorist attacks is to do our work well, to help those who need our help, and to achieve our vision of a world without Alzheimer's disease." Registration for the walk is $35 and includes an event t-shirt, food, refreshments, entertainment, chances for prize giveaways and much more to each walker. Teams of walkers are encouraged. Hosted by a network of chapters throughout the year, Memory Walk is the Alzheimer's Association's signature fundraising event --- it takes place in more than 400 communities across the country. Money raised from the walks supports programs and services that assist diagnosed individuals, their families and caregivers residing in the National Capital Area. Last year the walks included over 1,000 participants and raised more than $120,000. The Alzheimer's Association, National Capital Area is here to help the estimated 350,000 people impacted by Alzheimer's disease, including those diagnosed, their families and caregivers residing in Northern Virginia, suburban Maryland and Washington, DC. The Alzheimer's Association, National Capital Area will hold another Memory Walk on Sunday, October 14, from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. on the campus of Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park, MD.
