For Immediate Release: June 20, 2001
Looking for a challenge? Want to see beautiful scenery, help a great cause and meet some great people? The Fifth Annual Tour de Canal -- the country's longest off-road charity ride at 184-miles -- is scheduled this year for September 8 and 9, 2001. Bike enthusiasts also have 100- and 10-mile ride options. The event benefits the Alzheimer's Association, National Capital Area.
For those who want to prepare for the bike event, the Tour de Canal committee has developed a four-month training program in which interested participants can undertake rides of increasing lengths, starting at 12-15 miles, and ending in August with rides of 60-80 miles-more than enough to qualify for the September event. Qualifying rides are free.
Completing a 50-mile qualifying ride is mandatory to participate in the 184- and 100-mile rides. Qualifying dates began in the spring and will continue throughout the summer months on the following dates: 6/23, 7/15, 7/28, 8/12, 8/25, from Carderock to Whites Ferry (50 miles and back).
The Alzheimer's Association, National Capital Area is the region's primary resource for families and professionals caring for persons with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. For more information on the Tour de Canal, call Kelly Meltzer toll-free at (866) 259-0042, ext 119.
