News Release: Merger

Local Alzheimer's Association Chapters Merge To Form New National Capital Area

For Immediate Release:   April 30, 2001

(Fairfax, Virginia) - April 30, 2001 - Area families coping with Alzheimer's disease now have a single organization to turn to for support: the newly-created Alzheimer's Association, National Capital Area. The new chapter merges together the Greater Washington and Northern Virginia Chapters and incorporates all of the counties and communities previously served, including Northern Virginia, suburban Maryland and Washington, DC.

The National Capital Area has a new toll-free phone number, 1-866-259-0042, and new web site address, www.alz-nca.org. The new Chapter's corporate office is located at 11240 Waples Mill Road, Suite 402, Fairfax, VA, 22030. Offices also are located in suburban Maryland and Washington, DC.

"Our goal is to reach more people and provide them with better services," said Anthony Sudler, President and CEO of the National Capital Area. "By forming a single entity in our community, we can provide programs and services more efficiently and effectively."

The merger was accomplished after careful planning and research by the Boards of Directors of both former chapters over a two year period, said Sudler. Officially merged in January 2001, the new chapter restructured staff and operations to reflect the new entity. The financial resources of each chapter were combined, and several members from previous boards of each chapter join new members to serve on the National Capital Area's Board of Directors.

From the first signs of memory loss through diagnosis and throughout the disease's progression, the Alzheimer's Association, National Capital Area has programs and services to help individuals, families and professionals caring for people in the community who have Alzheimer's disease or a related disorder. Chapter programs and services include:

The National Capital Area is part of a national network of Alzheimer's Association chapters. The largest private funder of Alzheimer research, the Association has committed more than $100 million toward research into the causes, treatment, prevention and cure of Alzheimer's disease.
