"We face great challenges in the aging process," says new board member, Julius "Knox" Singleton, "A lot of people in the community need information and support and I want to be a part of providing education and support services to my fellow community members." Although Knox's resume is close to three pages long with several degrees, an extensive background in the Army Air Corps and U.S. Navy and several years of counseling older adults and adult children with aging relatives, the amount of time that Knox has dedicated to community service is impressive, indeed. Knox served on the Fairfax Area Commission on Aging from 1981 to 1991, including two terms as chairman. He established and directed the Springfield Information and Counseling Center for Older Adults. He also helped initiate and serve on the steering committee of the Learning in Retirement Institute at George Mason University. In 1995, Knox founded and served as president for the Lifetime Learning Institute of Northern Virginia, Inc. (LLI), sponsored by the Northern Virginia Community College. LLI is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization dedicated to providing continuing educational opportunities to older adults of all backgrounds and income levels. In just four short years, Knox has been instrumental in ensuring its success and increasing membership to 175 individuals. Knox has recently stepped down from LLI's presidency to pursue other community service activities. The Northern Virginia Chapter is lucky to have such a dedicated and visionary community leader as a member of its board. Welcome, Knox!
