FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (May 13, 1999) -- "How can I Alzheimer's-proof my home?" "What can I do to care for my loved one from a distance?" "What happens if my loved one moves to a residential facility?" "How can I improve my caregiving?" Answers to these and many of the questions family caregivers and professionals ask will be answered at Dimensions of Dementia: the 2nd Annual Education and Training Academy. The Academy is being held June 3-4 at Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale campus and is sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association Greater Washington and Northern Virginia Chapters. The Academy will feature more than forty sessions and participants are encouraged to attend both days. Family caregivers and professionals will thoroughly explore issues related to Alzheimer's and other memory loss disorders. Conference attendees can select the sessions most pertinent to their individual situation and tailor the educational information to fit with their individual needs and wants. Workshops for the professional caregiver include The ABCs of Assessment, Introduction to Therapeutic Touch, Raising Awareness to Cross-Cultural Barriers to Care, A Recipe for a Successful Dining Experience, Pharmacological Management of Dementia, Nurturing the Staff Caregiver, Activities Make the World Go 'Round and much more. Eleven contact hours (CEUs) are available through Howard University. Topics for the family caregiver include Doctors, Doses and Diagnoses, Caregiving from a Distance, Legal and Financial Issues, Redefining Wellness: Issues of Spirituality and Religiosity in Health, Alzheimer's-Proofing Your Home, Assisted Living - Is it Right for You?, Bathing Without a Battle, All in the Family: Difficult Relationships, Dementia Care, Don't Slip, Don't Trip- Get a Grip on Home Safety and much more. Nationally known motivational speaker, Al Way from Jubilee USA Training and Development Company in Washington, D.C. will lift the spirits with an inspirational session called Transformation: Unleashing the Winner in You. George Washington University Medical Center and LifeDesign LLC are the Academy's sponsors. Registration fees include all general and concurrent sessions, workshops, training intensives, continental breakfasts, luncheons and handout materials. A free shuttle service will transport conference attendees from the Dunn Loring metro to the Academy site. Free parking is available as well.
