Activity Based Training |

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (ARLINGTON, VA - February 17, 1999) -- Getting dressed may seem fairly simple to most people. But, for someone with Alzheimer's disease, dressing, interacting with others and other "simple" activities can be frustrating and confusing experiences. To help professional caregivers with activities and Alzheimer care, the Northern Virginia Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association has created "Activity Based Alzheimer Care: Building a Therapeutic Training Program." "Activities are an integral part of a person's well-being. This is especially true when that person has Alzheimer's disease," says Betty Ransom, Director of Education at the Alzheimer's Association, Northern Virginia Chapter. "By training healthcare professionals to build individualized activity programs, we can help them enhance care for people with this disease." "Activity Based Alzheimer Care: Building a Therapeutic Program" is designed for professional caregivers, including activity professionals, nursing assistants, social workers, nurses and unit leaders who work with individuals with dementia. Program participants will learn about the significance of activities to individuals with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, as well as how to adapt activities and the environment to better meet individual needs. Participants will also learn a variety of ways to evaluate current activity programs. The training workshop is scheduled for Thursday, April 8, 1999 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Arlington, Virginia. The training program meets the criteria for seven hours of continuing education from the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals (NCCAP). The fee is $110. To register, call the Northern Virginia Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association at (703) 359-4440.
