Preserving the Caregiving
The daily stresses of caregiving are not solely the result of the continued deterioration of the loved one affected. The well-being of the family caregiver is essential. The most difficult part of being a caregiver is recognizing their limitations.
Supporting this theory, the Gerontology Center at Pennsylvania State University has conducted a study on the positive effects that adult daycare centers have on the caregiver. According to "Stress Reduction for Family Caregiver: Effects of Adult Day Care Use" (Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences, October 1998) caregivers who placed their loved ones with Alzheimer's disease in adult daycare programs at least two times per week experienced considerably lower levels of stress and psychologically healthier than a control group not using adult daycare.
An alarming number of caregivers are unaware of their community resources, such as adult daycare programs. The study was first commissioned to answer questions concerning the use of respite centers, such as why do families not use respite services sooner, and why do some never use daycare at all? Steven H. Zarit, the report's lead author said, "It's important that we reach out to caregivers at the time diagnosis is made so we can educate them about what is available."
There are several adult daycare programs in the Northern Virginia Chapter service area.
