"The 2nd Annual Dimensions of Dementia Education and Training Academy promises to be as good or better than the inaugural academy held in 1998," declares Ed Zetlin, President of the Chapter's board of directors. The Academy will be held June 3-4, at the Annandale campus of Northern Virginia Community College. This stellar event is organized by the Northern Virginia and Greater Washington Chapters of the Alzheimer's Association. More than 40 volunteers and staff have been working diligently to develop sessions that reflect a broad array of interests. Highly qualified presenters, selected for their particular areas of expertise, will address current research and practices. More than 40 general and concurrent sessions are scheduled, with half designed specifically for family caregivers and half for professional caregivers. Among the topics to be addressed are: Pharmacological research, therapeutic touch, activities that work, atypical dementias, Alzheimer-friendly environments, bathing basics, managing negative behaviors, ethical issues, end of life care, and much more. A special half-day intensive on legal and financial issues (for family caregivers) also will be part of the Academy offerings. Anthony Sudler, executive director of the Northern Virginia Chapter emphasizes that "all professional, lay, and family caregivers interested in providing quality care to persons with dementia are invited to attend. Whether persons attend one day or both days, the Academy will be an invaluable time for learning and for personal and professional growth."
