Chapter Approved for Grant Funding

The Arlington Health Foundation (AHF) is a philantropic organization serving Northern Virginia. It is with great joy and gratitude that the Alzheimer's Association received two grants: one for $56,000 to enhance the Multicultural Outreach Initiative and one for $11,750 to develop and implement a Dementia-Specific Needs Assessment.

With this Multicultural Outreach support, the Chapter will initiate its plans to reach out to ethnic elders who have Alzheimers or other related forms of dementia and their families. Minority elders generally are suspicious of the health care system and rely on kinship and friendship networks to cope with caregiving issues.

The project will:

  • Increase the awareness and understanding of the impact of the disease on diagnosed individuals;
  • Educate and train family intermediaries and gatekeepers to better care for diagnosed individuals;
  • Develop culturally sensitive and translated literature and materials; and
  • Provide access to counseling, resources and referral services.

The targeted populations to be served include the African American, Hispanic and Asian (Korean and Vietnamese) communities. Outreach coordinators will be hired on a part time basis to assist with the outreach for the multiethnic groups. Some of the key activities will be: to develop networks and partnerships to increase to health care services and to create a sense of trust and credibility in the ethnic community; to develop culturally sensitive and translated materials to increase awareness and understanding of Alzheimers disease; and to provide education and training to both family and professional caregivers about Alzheimers disease and community resources. The grant will produce a Multicultural Community Resource Guide to assist providers who serve multi-ethnic populations. Persons interested in volunteering for this project or wishing any information, please contact: Pauline Mahon-Stetson at 359-4440 x105.

The Dementia-Specific Needs Assessment will be implemented from February to June, 1998. The focus of the needs assessment will be on:

  • the diagnosed individual in the early stages of Alzheimers disease;
  • the needs of the family caregivers; and
  • gaining an understanding of the best programs to serve our population.

The needs assessment will include focus groups, surveys and personal interviews. If you are a current or past caregiver and are interested in participating, please contact the Chapter office at (703) 359-4440.
