The Multicultural Outreach Project has completed its first six-months of activities. During Phase I, project members have recruited key ethnic leaders, policymakers and service providers to reach out to the African American, Hispanic, Korean and Vietnamese communities. The emphasis has been to develop outreach strategies and an understanding of the strengths, weaknesses, barriers to and understanding of Alzheimer's disease and access to health and aging services within each culture.

Some of the major milestones over this period have been to:

  • Assess the commitment of 25 collaborating partners;
  • Evaluate the transferability of 20 models from other chapters, various state programs and national initiatives;
  • Establish an Education Committee and Translation Team to review information currently distributed by the Chapter; and
  • Provide training for partners and volunteers involved in the project.

Training has begun for project volunteers and the partners. Recently, several volunteers and partners attended the "Dimensions of Dementia" conference held in Washington, D.C. and others attended the Chapter's Helpline training.

At the Southeast Area Meeting of the Gerontological Society of America in Atlanta, Georgia in May, Anthony Sudler, Pauline Mahon-Stetson and Susana Ortiz Ang made presentations on "Building Future Strength Through Diversity," and "Multicultural Outreach Initiative From the Chapter Perspective."

Phase II will involve the implementation of the Outreach Initiative. Two part-time outreach workers will work with the Hispanic and Vietnamese communities, while further design of fact sheets, posters and brochures will be done. We will develop an outline of the activities for the 25 educational forums to be undertaken in 1999.

Congratulations to the volunteers and partners who have made the activities of the Multicultural Outreach Project a reality. The dedication and commitment has been helpful to set the ground work to eventually bring the information and programs of the Chapter to the multiethnic communities.

Special mention must be given to Susana Ortiz Ang who served as the Chair of the Hispanic Committee over the last year. Her direction has been a true asset to the Chapter. We wish her luck in her acceptance to George Mason University Law School this fall. She has accepted an invitation to be a member of our Board of Directors.

We offer a special thanks to Gwynne H. McCatherine, the new Chair of the African American Committee and Deirdre Pollack who served as interim chair of the committee and brought us through a transition period.
