![]() Multicultural Outreach initiatives identify and serve the culturally sensitive needs of individuals and families affected by Alzheimers disease and other dementias. Please read the Multicultural Outreach Program Update from October, 1998. Background: The Multicultural Outreach Initiative was approved by the Board of Directors in June of 1996. The purpose was to bring services and programs of the Chapter to the culturally diverse groups in our target area. Northern Virginia has a mosaic of cultures, languages, and nationalities. According to the 1990 Census one in four persons is a member of a racial or ethnic minority, and one in seven Northern Virginians are foreign born. English is not the primary language spoken in almost one in five households. It is the focus of the Multicultural Outreach Initiative to help identify and serve the culturally sensitive needs of Elders and their families affected by Alzheimers disease and other forms of dementia. A 3-Year Strategic Plan developed by a Multicultural Committee and is now underway to identify the need for bilingual/bicultural information, educational programs and services for the multiethnic populations. As we enter into the 21st century it is expected to have culturally competent models which have been tested and can be replicated by others. The Multicultural Committee represent the diverse cultural groups in our territory. They represent community and ethnic leaders, service providers, policy makers who are targeting the needs of the Hispanic, Asian and African American communities. The approach is a multicultural perspective which emphasizes the concept of culture as central rather than being a marginal aspect. Mission: To improve the quality of life of culturally diverse Elders and their families who are affected with Alzheimers disease and other forms of dementia within our service area. Goals: A major goal is to incorporate the Multicultural Outreach Initiative into the existing Chapters programs and services and to develop and implement culturally sensitive models in the community.
