Requests in the 1997 Legislative Platform

For a family caring for an Alzheimers patient, community based services -- providing in-home care, transportation, and home delivered meals -- are critical needs allowing a patient to remain at home as long as possible. The Association strongly endorses appropriations to provide in-home support and protective services facilitating long term care. The request reflects situations assessed by Area Agencies on Aging and annualized by the Virginia Department for the Aging. The "critical unmet need" figures reflect the amount necessary to serve people at risk of being unable to remain in their own homes due to a lack of services. The requests reflect the needs of 10,115 elderly individuals with critical needs.

Service Need Assessed Need Critical Need
Home Delivered Meals $3,487,569 $1,524,000
In-Home Care $15,816,341 $8,126,664
Transportation $2,152,310 $428,437
Long Term Care Ombudsman Program $200,000 $200,000
Case Management $200,000 $200,000
Total Request $21,856,220 $10,479,101
