Safe Return

Most people think of Alzheimers disease as memory loss, but few realize that wandering is a common and potentially life-threatening behavior of persons with the disease. As many as 70 percent of the 4 million Americans with Alzheimers will wander at some point, often leaving home and unable to find their way back.

Safe Return provides registrants and their families with a personalized bracelet and other identification materials, and stores contact information in a national computerized database. The programs nationwide, toll-free 800 number, listed on the bracelet, is linked to a network of 17,000 law enforcement agencies nationwide. Each registrant will be assigned their own individual I.D. number by which they can be identified. Caregivers may also choose to wear an I.D. bracelet. This can alert others to look after the person with Alzheimers if the caregiver becomes incapacitated.

Registration in the Safe Return program is relatively simple and inexpensive. Included on the program brochure is a registration form. This should be filled out completely with attention to accurate detail. Include a recent photo of the applicant plus a check for $45 made out to Safe Return. To receive a Safe Return brochure with an included application, please contact the Chapter office at (866) 259-0042 and speak with Jane Priest.
